More productivity with the Pomodoro technique

Do you want to study and write your thesis more efficiently? Are you looking for more focus because you often get distracted? Then, consider using the Pomodoro technique. This simple and powerful method, developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, offers a structured approach to completing tasks and improving concentration. It’s ideal for students who tend to procrastinate, exhibit evasive behavior, struggle to maintain an overview, and get easily distracted.

How did the Pomodoro technique originate?

Cirillo noticed during his studies that he had difficulty concentrating and focusing for long periods of time. That’s why he decided to use a kitchen timer in the shape of a tomato (pomodoro). For Cirillo, the timer served as a visual reminder to fully concentrate on his tasks. After completing a focused work session, he would take a short break. He discovered that this technique improved his productivity and reduced fatigue. And that’s how the Pomodoro technique came to fruition!

How does the Pomodoro technique help you write your thesis?

You can use the Pomodoro technique for your thesis research and writing process. Follow the steps described below to make the most of it. Ensure that you have a clear goal in mind for each task you want to complete during a Pomodoro session. Whether it involves reading literature or writing a specific section, make your goal specific and tangible.

How do you use the Pomodoro technique?

The Pomodoro technique is a very simple method that follows the steps below:

  • Start with your goals: Before you begin, it is important to consider your objectives. What are the course materials you want to master or which specific section of your thesis do you intend to tackle? It could be a chapter you need to read, notes you need to review, or an assignment you need to complete. Make sure your goal is clear and well-defined.
  • Set the timer: Set a timer for 25 minutes (this is one pomodoro). During this period, you need to fully focus your attention on the task you have chosen, avoiding any distractions.
  • Work focused: Throughout the pomodoro, dedicate yourself completely to the task at hand. Minimize possible distractions by muting your phone, ignoring social media messages, and refraining from surfing the Internet.
  • Pause and relax: Once the 25 minutes are up, stop working and take a 5-minute break. Use this time to stretch, take deep breaths, and relax. Alternatively, you can make yourself a cup of coffee, tea, or have a glass of water. This short break will help you recharge your energy and regain focus.
  • Move to the next pomodoro: After a 5-minute break, proceed to the next 25-minute pomodoro (again, using a timer). Once you have completed four pomodoros, take a longer break of about 15-30 minutes.
  • Tip: Keep track of the number of pomodoros you complete each day and take note of your progress and accomplishments.
  • Be flexible: It’s possible that some tasks might require more than one pomodoro to complete. In such cases, you can break the task down into smaller parts and work on them using multiple pomodoros.
  • Also, experiment with what works for you: Although the Pomodoro technique follows a structured approach, it doesn’t mean you have to adhere strictly to the suggested times. Adjust the duration of the pomodoros and breaks according to your own needs and ability to concentrate.
  • Stay consistent: Consistency is crucial when it comes to learning. Therefore, try to incorporate the Pomodoro technique regularly into your study and thesis writing routine.

What tools can I use if I want to apply the Pomodoro technique?

There are several tools available that you can use to implement the Pomodoro technique. It is important to choose the tool that best suits you and that can be easily integrated into your daily routine.

  • Do you prefer working offline? In that case, you can use a notebook and a timer. Mark your start and end times and record your progress in the notebook. You can use a kitchen timer or the timer on your mobile phone as your timer.
  • Many digital calendars and to-do lists, such as Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and Trello, have built-in timer functions that you can use to implement the Pomodoro technique.
  • Due to the popularity of the technique, there are now numerous mobile apps available. Check your app store and see which one works best for you.

When can I use the Pomodoro technique?

The Pomodoro Technique enhances focus and helps with procrastination or difficulties concentrating for extended periods. We often recommend combining this technique with detailed planning to create structure for yourself.
